Mill Mountain Theatre is committed to its role as a flagship cultural institution in the Roanoke Valley. We strive to continually deepen our community ties through creative engagement with new audiences and partners in a growing and diversifying region. We accomplish these goals by taking work outside our walls and offering low-barrier to entry programming on-site.
Education Partnerships
Mill Mountain takes theatre education outside our walls through dynamic partnerships with organizations such as the West End Center for Youth, YMCA After School, Roanoke City Public Schools, Roanoke area libraries, Roanoke Parks & Recreation, Star City Reads, and many more. These short and long term residencies place Mill Mountain Conservatory faculty in educational or cultural settings to facilitate artistic education in accordance with the needs of the partnering organization.
If you are interested in planning a partnership with Mill Mountain Education, contact Francesca Reilly, Director of Education.
Performances
Free-to-the-public and pay-what-you-can offerings through the Mill Mountain Young Audiences Series are a cornerstone of our community engagement efforts. These performances offer an opportunity for students and adults, regardless of socioeconomic status, to experience theatre firsthand in both traditional and non-traditional performance spaces. We also offer discounted rush tickets for patrons under 30 a half hour before each of our Mainstage performances.
Community Conversations
Mill Mountain Theatre aspires for ideas planted by our performances to blossom into dialogue outside our walls. In service of this effort, we host curated conversations addressing pressing community issues represented on our stages. Check back for information on upcoming conversations.
Special Events
As one of Roanoke’s foremost artistic hubs, Mill Mountain Theatre provides opportunities to experience our physical space as something more than just a theatre. With events inspired by the material on our stages as well as the material of our community, we aspire to be stewards of our spaces and resources to support the cultural life of the Roanoke Valley.
If you are interested in an outreach partnership with Mill Mountain Theatre please contact Francesca Reilly, Director of Education.
“If anyone is ever in doubt of the impact that theatre is capable of making, I suggest that they take a visit to the West End Center during a Mill Mountain Theatre workshop. To see a group of kids discover that they are capable of something new and different and exciting is honestly beyond compare. These kids are eager to use their bodies, voices, and minds in creative and challenging ways; they only have to be given the opportunity.”
