The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

Six kids vie for a spelling championship while disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives. The play includes the songs – “My Friend, the Dictionary,” “I Speak Six Languages” and “Pandemonium” – as well as charming wit and humor. This show will feature MMT’s Summer Apprentice Company alongside other professionals- with guest appearances by you, the audience!

Rated: PG 13 for Content

Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka Jr.

Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka Jr. follows candy maker Willy Wonka as he stages a contest by hiding golden tickets in five of his scrumptious candy bars. Whoever comes up with these tickets will win a free tour of the Wonka factory, as well as a lifetime supply of candy. Four of the five winning children are insufferable brats, but the fifth is a likeable young lad named Charlie Bucket, who takes the tour in the company of his equally amiable grandfather. MMT’s version puts young actors in the spotlight, singing memorable songs including “Pure Imagination,” “The Candyman,” “ I’ve Got a Golden Ticket,” “ Oompa-Loompa,” and “I Want it Now.”

Little Shop of Horrors

Part horror comedy musical, part sci-fi spoof; all delicious fun! Little Shop of Horrors has been making audiences all over the country scream with laughter since its debut in the early 80’s. Meek floral assistant Seymour Krelbourn discovers a new breed of plant and names it “Audrey II” after his co-worker crush. The plant, however, has a mind of its own, and promises Seymour fame and fortune as long as Seymour feeds him what he really wants- BLOOD! The musical was turned into a movie in 1986, starring Rick Moranis as Seymour, Steve Martin as Audrey’s sadistic dentist boyfriend, and Levi Stubbs as the voice of Audrey II. Featuring a hit 1960s pop/rock score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, this smash hit musical features the songs “Suddenly Seymour,” “Skid Row,” “Feed Me (Git It)” and many more.

A Chorus Line

Hopeful, heartbreaking and hilarious, A Chorus Line tells the personal stories of 17 dancers auditioning for 8 spots in the chorus of a new Broadway show. Through song and dance they describe the families, jobs, and tough times that shaped their lives and careers. Unforgettable songs by Marvin Hamlisch include “What I Did For Love,” “At The Ballet,” and the joyous finale, “One.”

This production is produced in agreement with Actors’ Equity Association.

A Year With Frog And Toad

This charming musical, the first children’s show to reach Broadway, is a year in the life of two amphibian friends and a host of other woodland characters. Songs about flying, swimming and sledding will take young audiences into a fantasy forest of new friends and adventures. MMT will perform this show around the region at schools, libraries, parks and neighborhood venues to delight families. Admission is free and, MMT will distribute free books to student audience members, as part of our initiative connecting theatre to literacy.

Spring Awakening

A rock musical about teenagers caught between the tumult of adolescence and the frustrating lack of experience with sex, pregnancy, abortion and suicide, guilt, innocence and death, all with wailing guitars, driving percussion and tortured young voices. The musical, based on a 19th century German play, won 8 Tony Awards in 2006.

Performed by the 2018 MMT Summer Apprentice Company.

Shrek The Musical – TYA Version

Music by Jeanine Tesori, Book & Lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire.

Once upon a time, as all fairytales begin, there lived an ogre named Shrek. His swamp was invaded by castoff characters from other fairytales. To reclaim the swamp, Shrek must rescue a princess and in the process, he falls in love with her. Adapted from the animated feature film, this Theatre for Young Audiences adaptation will be cast with talented local children and teens, many from our MMT Conservatory program. In conjunction with this production, MMT will distribute free books to student audience members, as part of our initiative connecting theatre to literacy.

West Side Story

Based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, this classic follows warring families of teenaged gangs and star-crossed lovers, desperate for somewhere to be together forever. The romantic and violent story is told through choreography based on the Jerome Robbins original Tony Award-winning dances, with the music of Leonard Bernstein and the words of then beginner Stephen Sondheim. Since its Broadway debut 60 years ago, it has remained a shining example of the best of this truly American art form. This production of West Side Story is MMT’s contribution to the global celebration of composer Leonard Bernstein’s centennial.

Mamma Mia!

Fly in for a fABBAulous time at Mill Mountain Theatre this Spring. Mamma Mia! tells the story of Sophie, a twenty year old bride-to-be who longs to have her father walk her down the aisle. The problem is, she has no idea who he is! After reading her mother’s diary, filled with her mom’s adventures in love, Sophie invites each of the three potential fathers to her wedding. With nonstop laughs and exhilarating dance numbers set to the iconic music of ABBA, Mamma Mia! has been a global smash hit since its premiere on Broadway in 2002. Notable songs include “Take A Chance on Me,” “Super Trouper,” “Dancing Queen”, and more!

A Peter Rabbit Tale: A Children’s Musical

Beatrix Potter’s classic story A Peter Rabbit Tale comes to life in this spirited  children’s musical, touring the Roanoke Valley this summer. Peter Rabbit has begun to believe that being a rabbit isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. His mother is always making him do chores and he’s had enough of his goody two-shoes twin sisters: Flopsy and Mopsy. After being picked on for the last time, Peter decides to run away from home. When he encounters difficulties living with feisty squirrels and sewing mice, he discovers that home might not be too bad after all. MMT will perform this show around the region at schools, libraries, parks and neighborhood venues to delight families.

Admission is free and, MMT will distribute free books to student audience members, as part of our initiative connecting theatre to literacy.

Next To Normal

Winner of the Pulitzer-Prize for Drama, this groundbreaking musical follows the Goodmans, a seemingly typical American family whose lives are anything but normal. The contemporary and electrifying musical shares the Goodman family’s intricate battle with mental health. Abundant with love, sympathy, and heart, Next To Normal takes the audience into the minds of each character, and reminds us that nobody’s family is normal.

Contains mature language and content. There will be no late seating.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR

Journey under the sea with Ariel and her friends in Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR. In a magical underwater utopia, mermaid Ariel’s only wish is to live on land. But first she’ll have to meet a prince, defy her father, and strike up a deal with an evil sea witch! Classic songs like “Part of Your World”, “Poor Unfortunate Souls”, “Kiss the Girl” and more appear in this one-hour version of the story we all know and love. This fully produced production featuring local youth is perfect for the whole family. In conjunction with this production, MMT will distribute free books to children in attendance, as part of our initiative connecting theatre to literacy.

This production showcases our Conservatory youth talent and is presented on the Trinkle MainStage as a part of our Young Audience Series.

The Sound of Music

The hills are alive in the Roanoke Valley this holiday season with Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound Of Music, best known for its film adaptation starring Julie Andrews as the high-spirited governess Fraulein Maria. This 1959 classic has songs like “Climb Ev’ry Mountain”, “Do-Re-Mi’, and “The Sound of Music”, perfect for the whole family. Share this heartwarming story with a cast that mixes national talent with your local favorites in Roanoke’s most beloved musical: The Sound of Music.

Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical

Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical will be released for FREE on September 15th in honor of National Online Learning Day, and runs until October 9th on Broadway on Demand. Click the ticket button above to register for your FREE access link!

8-year-old Lily Polkadot just moved to the “Squares Only” small town of Rockaway, and is the first Polkadot in an all Square school. Experiencing everything from daily bullying to segregated drinking fountains, Lily feels hopeless until she meets Sky, a shy Square boy whose curiosity for her unique polkadot skin blooms into an unexpected friendship. Inspired by Civil Rights pioneers Ruby Bridges and The Little Rock Nine, Polkadots serves as a colorful history lesson for the world, reminding us that our differences make us awesome, not outcasts.  Admission is free to this digital production, and MMT will steam through Broadway on Demand.

Adapted from the beloved book by the same name, this charming bilingual play with music follows the story of Tomás Rivera, the son of an immigrant farmworker, as he discovers a surprising world of possibility inside his local library, thanks to a special librarian. This inspirational, theatrical biography proves that reading and respect can make anything possible. Kicking off the 2022 Trinkle MainStage Series is the Tony-Award-winning musical In The Heights. Transporting audiences to a vibrant community in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood, this groundbreaking musical tells a universal story of family, hope, and resilience. Bodega owner Usnavi and his friends dream, hope, and work for a brighter future. Written by Broadway’s Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), In The Heights combines hip-hop, salsa, and soul with classic musical theatre to create a theatrical experience like no other.


With recent changes stemming from Actors’ Equity Association and the decreasing COVID-19 rates in our area, Mill Mountain Theatre has decided to make masks optional, for everyone. Mill Mountain Theatre will continue to actively monitor the COVID-19 rates in the Roanoke Region and through the State and CDC recommendations.
