“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” Join the cast of Shakespeare’s As You Like It for this playful production, filled with flirtation, fun disguises, flippant fools, family dysfunction, and some of Shakespeare’s most famous phrases. Follow heroine Rosalind and her sassy friend Celia as they escape the tyrannical reign of Rosalind’s ruthless uncle and flee to the Forest of Arden, where they quickly find themselves learning that “love is merely a madness,” “age is as a lusty winter,” and “true lovers run into strange capers.” Don’t miss your chance to see one of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies brought to life on the Waldron Stage this summer!

Curious George: The Golden Meatball TYA

Join Curious George, the inquisitive, lovable monkey-star of books, movies and the award-winning PBS television show in a brand new musical, touring the Roanoke Valley this summer. Every year on “All-You-Can-Eat Meatball Day,” a day that comes just once a year, George helps his friend, Chef Pisghetti, cook some delicious meatballs and serve them to the hungry crowd. But this year, the crowd has vanished! Join George on a fun-filled adventure in which he learns about Rome, meatballs, and the secret ingredient to cooking. This touring show will be performed at schools, libraries, parks, and neighborhood venues around the region. Admission is free, and MMT will distribute free books to student audience members as part of our initiative connecting theatre to reading and literacy.

This is a short performance, but you may want to bring a water bottle with you.

All of our tours are during the day, so be sure you wear sunscreen and/or other protective sun gear!

Disney’s High School Musical: One Act Edition

Join Troy, Gabriella, and the students of East High in this smash hit musical based on the Disney Channel movie of the same title. On the first day after winter break at East High, basketball team captain Troy discovers that the brainy Gabriella, a girl he met singing karaoke on his ski trip, has just enrolled at East High. They cause an upheaval when they decide to audition for the high school musical, led by Ms. Darbus. Although many students resent the threat posed to the “status quo,” Troy and Gabriella’s alliance might just open the door for others to shine as well. Full of family fun and fabulous music, Disney’s High School Musical: One Act Version is perfect for students of all ages.

Peter & Wendy

Fly to Neverland with Peter Pan and Wendy Darling in this new adaptation of J.M. Barrie’s most famous novel. Local student performers will welcome audience members into a world full of mermaids, fairies, and pirates on the Waldron Stage for a performance that will mesmerize patrons of all ages. The original adaptation will also feature local students as designers and technicians. All public performances will be “pay what you can,” and include the distribution of free books to students as part of our initiative connecting theatre to reading and literacy.

Write Stuff! 2023

MMT’s young playwrights festival returns for its seventh anniversary! Write Stuff! encourages local middle & high school playwrights to share their work and culminates in readings of selected scripts. The winning scripts will be performed by Mill Mountain Theatre Conservatory students in this Pay What You Can performance.

“With the right words, you can change the world.” The beloved book, Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White is adapted into an even more loveable musical by Joseph Robinette with ear-catching music by Charles Strouse. Fern Arable is the eight-year-old daughter of John Arable, a pig farmer. Fern pleaded with her father to prevent turning the runt of the litter into bacon. In exchange for saving the pig, Fern nurtures the pig and names him Wilbur, who makes an unlikely and inseparable bond with a spider, named Charlotte.

Mad Libs Live!

 

Our story begins at the finals of Teen Superstars, the live TV show that will determine the most popular singing group at Blankville Central High. Virtuosa, Gogo, Geyser, and Merrily seem to have nothing in common – until just before airtime, when they realize that their songs are missing words! In the spirit of the “World’s Greatest Word Game,” our gang fills in the blanks with words from the audience! This truly interactive musical changes at every performance – thanks to you! Will GoGo get the girl? Will Geyser make new friends? Will Merrily come out of her shell? Will Virtuosa get out of the spotlight? And who will be the next Teen Superstars?? There is only one way to find out: Mad Libs Live!

Matilda

Matilda is a little girl with astonishing wit, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Over the course of her first term at school, Matilda and Miss Honey have a profound effect on each other’s lives, as Miss Honey begins not only to recognize but also appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!


Please note, to accommodate our young audience for this production, we have shifted the performance times. Our matinee performances will take place at 1:00 p.m., and evening performances will take place at 6:30 p.m. This time change only applies to our Young Audience Series.

Stellaluna

Stellaluna the bat, Verdi the snake, and Pinduli the hyena all seek refreshment at a watering hole one hot day, only to find themselves the subjects of a bullying lion’s ridicule. But by sharing stories about building self-confidence, these three misfit animals find wisdom, peace, and friendship. Based on popular books by Janell Cannon, this delightful musical is a treat for both children and adults.

Jeff Brown’s cherished children’s book has enchanted readers and adventurers worldwide, and now, Timothy Allen McDonald, renowned for works like ‘Willy Wonka’ and ‘James and the Giant Peach,’ breathes new life into everyone’s favorite two-dimensional hero in ‘The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley.’ Meet Stanley Lambchop, a typical ten-year-old longing for a break from his mundane life. His wish comes true when an unexpected accident leaves him as flat as a pancake. In this whirlwind musical odyssey, Stanley, the ultimate global explorer, embarks on a thrilling journey from Hollywood to Paris and Honolulu, seeking a way to regain his three-dimensional form. Along the way, he foils a museum heist in Paris and rides the waves in Hawaii, inching closer to his dream of becoming a three-dimensional boy once more.

Annie

Based on Harold Gray’s beloved comic strip, ‘Annie’ is a worldwide sensation, winning seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Peter and the Star Catcher is a whimsical prequel to the beloved story of Peter Pan, based on the novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. The play follows a young orphan and his companions as they embark on a high-seas adventure, where they meet Molly, a star catcher-in-training, who is on a mission to protect a magical substance called “starstuff.” With imaginative storytelling, clever humor, and an ensemble cast playing multiple roles, this play reveals the origins of Peter Pan, Captain Hook, and Neverland, capturing the magic of childhood wonder and the power of believing in the impossible.

The Rainbow Fish, The Musical

Shrek, The Musical

Shrek, The Musical (Theatre for Young Audiences version) is a family-friendly adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, based on the beloved animated film. Join Shrek, a lovable ogre, on his quest to rescue Princess Fiona, who has a surprising secret of her own. Along the way, Shrek teams up with a comical donkey and faces off against the scheming Lord Farquaad, learning about friendship, love, and self-acceptance. Filled with catchy songs, hilarious characters, and an uplifting message that being different is something to celebrate, this version is perfect for young audiences and a fun adventure for the whole family.

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, The Musical

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, The Musical! is based on the Caldecott Honor Award-winning book by Mo Willems and is about a pigeon who wants to drive the bus. The pigeon is struggling to find his place in the world until he sees the bus driver and decides he wants to be like her. When the bus driver has a crisis and her passengers are in danger of being late, the pigeon sees his chance to take the wheel. The pigeon uses a variety of tactics to get the bus driver to let him drive, including asking, pleading, cajoling, and even emotional blackmail. However, the bus driver and the audience keep telling him “no”. When the bus breaks down, the pigeon is called to help and flies from bus stop to bus stop to tell people the bus is coming.
