The Velveteen Rabbit

The classic story by Margery Williams explores the ways love can transform lives.  The book, first published in 1922, urges children to consider the philosophical question, “What makes something real?” In 2007, the National Education Association named it one of the top Teacher’s Top 100 Books for Children.  MMT’s production will feature student performers, designers, and technicians. As part of MMT’s continuing initiative connecting theatre and literacy, free books will be available for students. Rated: G For Families

The Jungle Book

The Jungle Book, a short play based on the classic stories by Rudyard Kipling, is MMT’s summer outreach production, taking live theatre to unconventional settings, including parks and libraries.  This production will feature our 2017 Summer Apprentice Company.

Published in 1894, The Jungle Book is a collection of fables set in the Indian jungle using anthropomorphized animals to teach moral lessons. Widely considered a classic of children’s literature, the stories have been adapted numerous times for both film and stage due to their evocative setting and imaginative characterizations.  As part of MMT’s continuing initiative connecting theatre and literacy, these free performances will include complimentary books for children.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow

It’s Halloween night and Will invites his friends up to the attic to tell spooky stories.  When the group of children find a copy of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in an old trunk, they decide to act it out using only things found in the attic.  This inventive and theatrical retelling of Washington Irving’s classic story is perfect Halloween fun for the whole family. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, published in 1820, tells the story of Ichabod Crane and his attempt to win the heart of his love, Katrina Van Tassel. This comical and ghostly tale follows Crane through the town of Sleepy Hollow, NY, where he is visited by a mysterious ghost, the Headless Horseman.

The play is appropriate for middle and high school students, and this production will feature student performers, designers, and technicians. The Pay What You Can performances will include distribution of free books to students, as part of our initiative connecting theatre to literacy.

Write Stuff!

MMT’s program to encourage young playwrights culminates in staged productions of the winning scripts.

 

Mill Mountain Theatre Conservatory proudly presents Write Stuff! for it’s 2nd Annual Festival.

 

This playwriting competition was open to local middle & high school students who submitted their original ten-minute play. The pieces were then read and three were selected by a panel of professional artists to be presented as staged readings on February 10, 2018 at 2:00pm on the Waldron Stage. Mill Mountain Theatre Conservatory students and other local talent will act in the staged readings directed by Mill Mountain Theatre staff. Write Stuff! serves to connect Mill Mountain Theatre’s expanding education programming with its historical and ongoing commitment to new play development.

Performance and presentation of winning plays will be February 10th, 2018 at 2:00pm on MMT’s Waldron Stage. All tickets are pay-what-you-can and only available 30 min prior to the performance.

Mother Goose Tales

When siblings Jack & Jill decide they’re too old for bedtime stories, they suddenly are whisked away to a strange land and have to find their way home. On their journey they meet Nursery Rhyme characters: the Itsy Bitsy Spider, Little Bo Peep, Humpty Dumpty and more, who lead them to the Queen: Mother Goose, who will help them get back home!

A collection of well-known fairy tales and nursery rhymes will come to life in song and pantomime. Children from MMT’s Conservatory will perform these classic tales for other children. In conjunction with this production, MMT will distribute free books to student audience members, as part of our initiative connecting theatre to literacy.

The Tempest

Sorcerers, sprites and spirits meet villains, and monsters, and kings in Shakespeare’s tragicomedy set on a remote island complete with a shipwreck. Romance and a raging storm end in revelations, redemption and marriage as Shakespeare’s plays so often do.

MMT’s shortened adaptation of the original script, an excellent introduction to Shakespeare for Middle and High School students, will be acted by MMT Conservatory students. In conjunction with this production, MMT will distribute free books to student audience members, as part of our initiative connecting theatre to literacy.

A Year With Frog And Toad

This charming musical, the first children’s show to reach Broadway, is a year in the life of two amphibian friends and a host of other woodland characters. Songs about flying, swimming and sledding will take young audiences into a fantasy forest of new friends and adventures. MMT will perform this show around the region at schools, libraries, parks and neighborhood venues to delight families. Admission is free and, MMT will distribute free books to student audience members, as part of our initiative connecting theatre to literacy.

Write Stuff!

MMT’s young playwrights festival Write Stuff! returns for its third year. Three plays were selected by a panel of readers from submissions to be produced as staged readings and performed by MMT Conservatory Students.

A Peter Rabbit Tale: A Children’s Musical

Beatrix Potter’s classic story A Peter Rabbit Tale comes to life in this spirited  children’s musical, touring the Roanoke Valley this summer. Peter Rabbit has begun to believe that being a rabbit isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. His mother is always making him do chores and he’s had enough of his goody two-shoes twin sisters: Flopsy and Mopsy. After being picked on for the last time, Peter decides to run away from home. When he encounters difficulties living with feisty squirrels and sewing mice, he discovers that home might not be too bad after all. MMT will perform this show around the region at schools, libraries, parks and neighborhood venues to delight families.

Admission is free and, MMT will distribute free books to student audience members, as part of our initiative connecting theatre to literacy.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR

Journey under the sea with Ariel and her friends in Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR. In a magical underwater utopia, mermaid Ariel’s only wish is to live on land. But first she’ll have to meet a prince, defy her father, and strike up a deal with an evil sea witch! Classic songs like “Part of Your World”, “Poor Unfortunate Souls”, “Kiss the Girl” and more appear in this one-hour version of the story we all know and love. This fully produced production featuring local youth is perfect for the whole family. In conjunction with this production, MMT will distribute free books to children in attendance, as part of our initiative connecting theatre to literacy.

This production showcases our Conservatory youth talent and is presented on the Trinkle MainStage as a part of our Young Audience Series.

Romeo and Juliet

All public performances of Romeo & Juliet are on Mill Mountain Theatre’s Waldron Stage: 20 Church Avenue SE, Roanoke, VA.

William Shakespeare’s classic tale of Romeo and Juliet is re-envisioned in an imaginative and theatrical adaptation on the Waldron Stage. Shakespeare’s most famous play of love, family feuds, and inevitable tragedy takes on a new life with local youth performers. Romeo and Juliet is appropriate for middle and high school students, and this production will feature student performers, designers, and technicians. The Pay-What-You-Can performances will include the distribution of free books to students, as part of our initiative connecting theatre to literacy.

Write Stuff! 2020

Write Stuff!, MMT’s young playwrights festival, returns for its fourth year! MMT’s program to encourage young playwrights culminates in readings and staged readings of the winning scripts.

6 plays have been selected to be workshopped this year.  3 plays will receive readings and 3 will be produced in a staged reading format, all performed by Mill Mountain Theatre Conservatory students.

 

Reading Series

True Love, by Gracie Ridings, shares the story of Sandy, a sixteen-year-old girl who is told by a psychic that she will meet her Aquarius true-love within the current moon cycle. Will Sandy meet the man of her dreams? Her best friend Minty will stop at nothing to see Sandy carried off into the sunset!

Okay, by Caroline Moledor, is a coming of age story, exploring the inner struggle of making friends and feeling like you belong. Follow Sam on her journey of growing up and becoming more comfortable in her own skin.

Café Amor, by Serena Fick and Anna Clare Fleenor, is a hilarious and farcical tale set in Victorian-era France. Forbidden romance, baguettes, and a poodle fill the Café Amor and run rampant with all of the creative characters that inhabit it.

 

Staged Reading Series

LoveFiguratively, by Conner Hunt, explores the chaotic world of speed dating. Join James Smith, a 34-year-old who enjoys fast food dinners and short runs on the treadmill, as he meets a menagerie of kooky characters. Will James find love or just continue to pick up the crazies?

The Third Wheels, by Ava Lazar, sheds light on the rivalry between the Prom Decor Club and the RPG (role-playing-games) club at the local high school. What starts out as an initiation prank between two students blossoms into a beautiful relationship.

Apple Apocalypse, by James Moledor, is an alternate-reality story when all apples have been banned from the world. Young Mack Intosh goes on a vendetta to see that apples are reinstated, and he hopes to make his Granny Smith proud.

 

The presentation of the winning plays will take place on February 22nd, 2020 at 7:00pm on MMT’s Waldron Stage.

Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical

Polkadots: The Cool Kids Musical will be released for FREE on September 15th in honor of National Online Learning Day, and runs until October 9th on Broadway on Demand. Click the ticket button above to register for your FREE access link!

8-year-old Lily Polkadot just moved to the “Squares Only” small town of Rockaway, and is the first Polkadot in an all Square school. Experiencing everything from daily bullying to segregated drinking fountains, Lily feels hopeless until she meets Sky, a shy Square boy whose curiosity for her unique polkadot skin blooms into an unexpected friendship. Inspired by Civil Rights pioneers Ruby Bridges and The Little Rock Nine, Polkadots serves as a colorful history lesson for the world, reminding us that our differences make us awesome, not outcasts.  Admission is free to this digital production, and MMT will steam through Broadway on Demand.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

“Lord what fools these mortals be!” Audience members of all ages will escape to the enchanted forest in Shakespeare’s most beloved comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, where a feuding fairy king and queen cross paths with four runaway lovers and a troupe of actors trying to rehearse a play. What could possibly go wrong? All performances will be set outdoors in this innovative production, bringing the Bard’s classic comedy to life. This Pay What You Can performance will include the distribution of free books to students as part of our initiative connecting theatre to reading and literacy.

Tomás and the Library Lady

Adapted from the beloved book by the same name, this charming bilingual play with music follows the story of Tomás Rivera, the son of an immigrant farmworker, as he discovers a surprising world of possibility inside his local library, thanks to a special librarian. This inspirational, theatrical biography proves that reading and respect can make anything possible. MMT will perform this free production across the valley to delight families and will distribute free books to student audience members as part of our initiative connecting theatre to literacy.

Write Stuff! 2022

MMT’s young playwrights festival returns for its sixth anniversary! Write Stuff! encourages local middle & high school playwrights to share their work and culminates in readings of selected scripts. The winning scripts will be performed by Mill Mountain Theatre Conservatory students in this Pay What You Can performance. 


Mask-wearing will be required for all MMT patrons including children under age 12 regardless of vaccination status. We cannot promise all parties will be spaced 6 feet apart. If you are concerned with spacing, you may arrive at the theatre 30 minutes prior to the show and we will do our best to seat you at a distance. MMT will follow all CDC and VDH guidelines at the time of performance.


This show will be presented on Mill Mountain Theatre’s Waldron Stage at 7:30 P.M. on February 18th and 19th.
